The chamber the vampires took us to was immense. It looked more like a cathedral than a cave, ceiling stretching far up above, well past the point where I could see. There were rich velvet curtains hung across the walls, covering what I assumed were entrances and exits, and a crimson rug leading from the main entrance we’d just walked through all the way up to a dais at the back of the hall. It was eerily similar to Viessa and Phaeron’s lair. Did noble vampires all hire the same interior designer?

As we approached the dais, I could see two thrones on it. There was really no other way to describe them; they were practically dripping with gold, carved elaborately with images I realised a moment too late depicted primarily humans being killed in various gruesome ways.

Sat in the thrones were two vampires. On the left, a woman, with pure white hair that hung about her face and trailed down to the floor. She wore a velvet gown just as white as her hair. The only spots of colour were her blood-red eyes and the crimson pendant that hung about her throat. Her face was gaunt, and there was something oddly familiar about it.

In the other throne was a man, dressed all in black – no, a grey so dark it was almost black, I realised as we got closer. His hair was a similar shade, tied at the nape of his neck and then left to flow down his back. He, too, had red eyes – and his face was also strangely familiar.

It was only when we got a little closer that Grey stopped so abruptly the vampire behind us almost walked into the back of him.

“You.” I’d never heard Grey’s voice so disgusted. Or angry. Even before, when he’d told me the Guild was wrong, even when we’d all cursed Nathanael’s name.

The man raised an eyebrow, looking amused.

“I’m sorry, do I know you? Surely not. I don’t recall associating with the peasantry.”

The woman laughed, a high tinkling sound that had to be fake. “Darling, don’t you see? These must be the creatures our sweetling has been playing with. The vampire with those unusual powers, the jotnar halfbreed, that pretty witch of Nathanael’s, and...” She paused, her gaze taking me in. “A hunter? Well! How fascinating! And captured alongside a vampire and a jotnar?”

I gritted my teeth, and didn’t answer. Some vampires could ensnare you like that, with just their voice – and the ones capable of that tended to be far harder to resist than simple hypnosis. Whoever these vampires were, they were powerful. At least she didn’t seem to be aware of what I was – she just thought I was a hunter, though I wasn’t sure what excuse I could give for how I’d been dragged into this.

“You might not know me, but I know you,” Grey snarled, taking a step forward – and getting grabbed from both sides by the guards who’d walked us here.
